What is oral surgery?

If you’re experiencing oral health issues such as overcrowding, damaged teeth or deep infections, you may need a tooth or several teeth removed. You may also need a tooth extraction if you’re dealing with impacted wisdom teeth, abscesses or severe decay. However, waiting lists for extractions through the NHS can be up to 12 months, which is a long time to wait if you’re suffering pain and discomfort.

Fast treatment has a number of benefits, most notably providing relief from pain and protecting against the spread of infections. It can also prevent the need for extensive dental treatment in the future. Once the affected tooth is removed, it then opens up possibilities for restorative dentistry, to bring back your sparkling smile.

We welcome referrals from other dentists for oral surgery, and self-referrals can be made by contacting the practice.

Why might you need Oral Surgery?

Wisdom Tooth Removal
One of the common reasons for needing oral surgery is for wisdom tooth removal. This may need to be done because the tooth is impacted, meaning it has not fully emerged through the gum, and therefore has become infected or decayed. Seeking treatment and getting the affected wisdom tooth removed quickly can avoid further discomfort as well as the risk of infection.

Tooth Extractions
We’ll always try to preserve your natural teeth, but there are occasions when it may be clinically necessary to perform a tooth extraction. For example, teeth that have failed to grow through the gum correctly, if they have become infected or damaged, or in cases of overcrowding. In these cases, it may benefit the health of the rest of your teeth to remove one or multiple teeth.
You may also need teeth removed in order to continue with other dental treatment. For example, to make space for orthodontic treatment so that the rest of your teeth have the space to move into correct alignment.

Dental Implants
Dr Barry Holmes is able to complete both any preparation treatments that may be needed, right through to the implant placement and restoration itself. This means that all of your care will be completed by one clinician here at Holmes Dental Care, helping you to feel reassured and cared for, from start to finish. As practice principal, Barry spends the majority of his time at Holmes Dental Care and ensures that all patients have a smooth experience, whatever their treatment needs.

Oral Surgery under Sedation

We know that any kind of surgery can be nerve wracking, so at Holmes Dental Care we have completed additional training in dental sedation. This means that nervous patients have the option of IV sedation, allowing you to be deeply relaxed during surgery and ensuring that you can receive the treatment that you need without any additional stress.

We use a technique called ‘conscious’ sedation, where a small injection into your arm or the back of your hand leaves you feeling relaxed to allow treatment to be carried out. This technique also has an amnesiac effect, so you may have little or no memory of the procedure once finished.

ORAL SURGERY FAQS

What is oral surgery for?

Oral surgery is the term used primarily for the removal of problem teeth. These may be decayed, impacted or infected teeth, impacted wisdom teeth, or teeth which need to be removed for effective orthodontic treatment. Oral surgery can also be required for treatments such as gum grafting and orthodontics.

Does oral surgery hurt?

We will use local anaesthetic to ensure that you do not feel any pain during your treatment. There may be a little discomfort or pressure during treatment. Afterwards, you can expect to feel a little sore but this can be treated with over the counter pain relief such as paracetamol and ibuprofen.

I’m feeling anxious about surgery - can I be sedated?

We know that the thought of undergoing oral surgery can be overwhelming and daunting if you have dental phobias or anxieties.

Sedation for oral surgery can be a game-changer for anxious patients, as it offers a range of benefits that not only ensure a more comfortable and relaxed experience but also allow for smoother and more effective procedures. Our experienced clinical staff will talk you through the process and let you know exactly what to expect when going through treatment.

How long will it take to heal?

You can expect to have some minor discomfort over the following days after your surgery but this can be managed with over the counter pain relief medication. In most cases, you will be able to return to work quickly and shouldn’t need extensive time off.

Dear Dr Holmes,

You’ve been brilliant to me – ‘a star’ in fact.

Thank you so much for everything. The relief is immeasurable and the stress of it all, the embarrassment etc etc. I am so grateful. Best wishes.

SC, had sinus lifting, GBR, implants & crown

I'm not sure if you realise how much of a difference your expertise and care and attention to detail have made to me. I can now smile naturally again - such a simple but essential gesture for good relationships and a happy life. After 9 months of feeling detached from those around me I now feel connected again to my loved ones, friends, colleagues, students, and even passing strangers. It's life enhancing to be able to share a smile with others. Thank you so much, all of you, for giving me back that simple but wonderful gift.

Tomorrow I have an important job interview, and I shall walk into the interview room with a big smile on my face, feeling confident.

Thank you! 🙂

DN, had implants, GBR and bridge

I have just completed a course of treatment having implants fitted and the whole process has been brilliant.

Initially I had a consultation with Dr. Holmes who then produced a report detailing all my options with costings and timescales etc. No pressure was placed on me to make a decision and there was no hard sell which was really good.

PC, had implants & guided bone regeneration
