What is dental sedation?

Dental sedation is a simple, safe and highly effective way to help nervous or dental phobic patients feel more able to undergo treatment. It can induce complete relaxation, giving you a way to get the treatment you need without worry.

At Holmes Dental Care, we use intravenous (IV) sedation, with a sedative called Midazolam. This is administered via an injection and is completely tailored to your individual needs. You remain conscious and able to respond to voices and touch, but feel drowsy and content throughout treatment. Afterwards, you will have little to no memory of the procedure.

What does IV sedation dentistry involve?

Consultation

If you are interested in how sedation would benefit you for an upcoming treatment, or we have suggested it to you, we see you for a comprehensive initial consultation. We discuss your fears or worries about dental treatment, and explain the procedure in as much detail as you are comfortable with. You can also ask us any questions and we do all we can to help you feel more at ease.

Planning

To make sure you are suitable for IV sedation, we assess your general health, including your blood pressure and oxygen levels. We check that you are happy to continue and give you some advice and instructions for the day of treatment. It is important that you have someone to accompany you to the practice on the day.

Sedation

On the day of your treatment, we make sure you are ready before administering the IV sedation. It is a small injection that combines the sedative with a painkiller and anaesthetic, which takes effect and makes you relaxed and drowsy very quickly. You are monitored closely during your dental treatment to make sure the levels of sedation are completely right for you.

Aftercare

When your treatment has finished, you will remember little to nothing about the procedure. You can leave the practice after around 30 minutes of recovery, but will need a friend or family member to take you home and stay with you until the full effects have worn off, which takes around 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

How is IV sedation different from general or local anaesthetic?

IV sedation effectively bridges the divide between local and general anaesthetic. You won’t be completely unconscious, as with a general, but you’ll be in a state of deep, sleepy relaxation that means you’ll have very little awareness or memory of your dental procedure. The dentist will be able to rouse you if required, to answer questions, for example, but it’s unlikely you’ll remember this afterwards.

If I’m conscious, will I still feel anxiety about my treatment?

No, because the sedation we use induces feelings of deep contentment and relaxation. Patients generally feel as though they’re sleeping. Conscious sedation, also known as sleep dentistry, also has an amnesiac effect, so you will remember very little, if any, of your treatment once it has finished.

What is dental anxiety?

Dental anxiety is a fear or phobia relating to dental procedures or visiting the dentist. It can be mild or more severe, causing patients to avoid necessary dental treatment and put off dental appointments. Dental anxiety can have a big impact on your oral health, and could lead to serious dental problems. At Holmes Dental Care, we can help. We are kind, understanding, and gentle, giving you a safe space and taking time to work with you to ease your nerves.

Is dental sedation safe?

Yes, dental sedation is very safe when administered and monitored by a qualified professional clinician. At Holmes Dental Care, our sedation dentists are trained and experienced in administering IV sedation safely and effectively, and we always put our patients first. We ensure you understand the procedure before obtaining your informed consent to continue.

Can dental sedation help with dental phobia?

Dental sedation can be very helpful when used to manage dental phobia. It can significantly reduce anxiety and fear, helping nervous patients feel more relaxed and able to undergo dental treatment. If you are interested in sleep dentistry to help with your dental phobia, please get in touch with our friendly team.

How long does it take for the effects of sedation to wear off?

In most cases, you will need to spend up to 30 minutes in recovery after your procedure with sedation. The full effects of conscious sedation take 24 hours to wear off, so you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home and to be with you at home until the effects have worn off. You may feel groggy, and won’t be able to operate electrical machinery, cook, use sharp implements or make any critical decisions during this time.
