What can laser dentistry be used for?

Waterlase

Waterlase is a safe and gentle alternative to traditional dental equipment. Using the laser and water spray, we can perform many procedures without the need for an injection or a drill, which will come as a big relief to many anxious patients. The laser light beam sterilises the area that is being worked on and cauterises the soft tissue as it goes, meaning little to no bleeding, minimal pain, rapid healing and low risk of infection.

Gummy smile and gum contouring

Many people feel embarrassed to smile due to an uneven gum line and don’t realise that there is a treatment available. Using laser dentistry, we can gently create a perfectly sculpted gum line to complement your teeth. Gum contouring can be performed in one appointment and is a reliable method of enhancing your smile.

Gum disease and peri-implantitis

We can use laser dentistry to treat gum disease (periodontal disease) by removing debris and bacteria that cause gum disease and can even stimulate new tissue growth. Lasers can also clean around infected dental implants (peri-implantitis). This has been shown to be effective in managing this complex condition.

Laser dentistry for TMJ-related symptoms

TMJ disorder is an extremely painful condition. It affects the jaws and the surrounding muscles. The most common symptoms include:

  • Popping or clicking in the jaw
  • Limited jaw motion or locked jaw
  • Jaw pain
  • Face pain
  • Headaches
  • Tooth wear or damage
  • Neck, shoulder and back pain

TMJ can be treated by restoring proper alignment to your jaw. We can use a laser in a non-invasive way to help you feel better, getting deep into the temporomandibular joint as well as the surrounding joints. This reduces the inflammation of the tissues, providing quick relief and also promoting tissue healing by stimulating the production of red blood cells.

Frequently asked questions

What is a dental laser?

A dental laser generates a very specific beam of concentrated light. This beam of light can remove areas of gum infection or tooth decay and artistically sculpt your gums with great precision and accuracy. The laser beam sterilises the affected area and seals off blood vessels, which minimises the chance of infection or bleeding. This means patients are much more comfortable both during and after treatment. In many instances, the need for anaesthetic injections is reduced and in some instances eliminated, as well as the associated side effects, such as numbness.

Are lasers new to dentistry?

Dental lasers have been used experimentally on the teeth and gums since the 1960s, and have long been the standard of care in medicine for many surgical and cosmetic procedures such as wrinkle removal, hair removal and many others. Our laser has been approved for hard and soft tissue procedures. At Holmes Dental Care, we are one of few dental practices to have this technology available for our patients.

How does laser dentistry reduce and eliminate pain?

Heat and vibration are the causes of most of the pain associated with the dental drill. Laser dentistry combines laser energy with an air and water spray to perform a wide variety of dental procedures more comfortably. As a result, we are able to replace the drill in many instances. This makes laser dentistry more comfortable and definitely the right choice for anxious patients.

What types of procedures can dental lasers do?

Dental lasers can be used for many applications in our practice, including:

  • Non-surgical gum therapy
  • Periodontal (gum) treatment
  • Smile design
  • Removing dental decay and old composite fillings
  • Sterilising infected root canals
  • Bone shaping and crown lengthening
  • Assisting oral surgery (often for removing teeth or placing implants).
