What are implant-retained dentures?

If you are missing all your teeth, and are fed up with loose or uncomfortable dentures, dental implants can be used to secure your denture and provide a long-lasting, supported and aesthetic solution. You can laugh and smile without worry, and eat and chew whatever you choose.

Dental implants fitted at strategic places in your jawbone are used to secure full or partial dentures to improve their stability. We can even adapt your existing dentures to fit newly-placed dental implants, giving invaluable comfort and security. Our implant dentist, Dr Barry Holmes, often recommends implant-retained dentures if there is insufficient bone available to place multiple implants, if you wish to avoid a complex bone graft, or if you prefer removable teeth.

Meet our implant dentist - Dr Barry Holmes

At Holmes Dental Care, we have an enviable reputation for implant dentistry across Cardiff, South Wales and beyond. Our principal dentist, Dr Barry Holmes, has been successfully placing implants for over 10 years, and is highly experienced in advanced reconstructive techniques. He was one of the first dentists in South Wales to achieve a Master’s Degree specifically in implant dentistry, and is a full member of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners and Royal College of Surgeons and ADI (Association of Dental Implantology).

What does the implant dentures procedure involve?

Consultation

We begin your implant dentures treatment with a detailed consultation. Our experienced implant dentist, Dr Barry Holmes, examines your mouth, making sure you are suitable for treatment, and explains the process to you in detail. You are also given the chance to ask any questions. If you have an existing denture you would like to stabilise, we make sure this will be possible.

Planning

We use our state-of-the-art dental equipment and cutting-edge techniques throughout your treatment. We carefully and accurately plan the best places for your dental implants. In the lower jaw, as few as two to four dental implants can be used to make a denture feel very secure.

Implant placement

Your dental implants are placed into your jawbone by Dr Barry Holmes, using local anaesthetic to minimise any discomfort. We can also use dental sedation if required. The implants take several months to heal and fuse with the surrounding bone in your jaw, so we may fit a temporary restoration to protect your gum during this time.

Fitting the dentures

Once your implants have healed and fused with the bone, we can connect your natural-looking fixed dentures in a variety of ways. The simplest and most cost-effective method involves ‘press-stud’ connections, known as locators, which the denture attaches to. A titanium bar can also be used to clip your denture to. To finish, we give you some tailored aftercare advice.

Frequently asked questions

What are fixed dentures?

A fixed denture, also known as an implant-supported denture, is a denture that is supported by and attached to implants. Implant-retained dentures are commonly recommended for the lower jaw because conventional dentures here tend to be less stable. Upper dentures tend to be more stable and do not always need the extra support provided by dental implants. However, you can receive implant-supported dentures in both the upper and lower jaws.

How are implant-retained dentures attached?

Implant-retained dentures can be attached to your dental implants in a number of ways. We can attach connectors to your implants, which allow your denture to be easily placed on top. We can also clip your denture to a titanium bar in your mouth.

What is the cost of fixed dentures?

The cost for implant-supported dentures varies depending on your individual case. A guide to all our dental treatment costs are listed on our fees page, and a more exact quote will be given after your consultation. We also offer the chance to spread the cost with finance options, subject to status.

How long do implant-retained dentures last?

With the proper care and attention, dental implants can last a lifetime. The denture that attaches to the top of your dental implants may need to be replaced every 10-20 years due to natural wear and tear.

Can I have implant-supported dentures if I do not have much jawbone remaining?

Insufficient bone in your jaw is not necessarily a barrier for implant-retained denture treatment. In many cases, a denture is one of the best ways to combat missing teeth, and we have many techniques available at Holmes Dental Care that can be used for patients with low levels of jawbone. These include advanced surgical techniques or bone grafting.

What if I do not want a removable denture?

At Holmes Dental Care, there are several alternative solutions to removable dentures. All-on-4 is one possible alternative. We will consider your individual needs and preferences when recommending possible solutions during a comprehensive implant consultation. We only prescribe solutions or treatments that are appropriate for your individual case.
