Don’t like needles or drills?
Waterlase is a safe and gentle alternative to traditional dental equipment.
Using the laser and water spray we can perform many procedures without the need for an injection or a drill, which will come as a big relief to many anxious patients.
The laser light beam sterilises the area that is being worked on and cauterises the soft tissue as it goes, meaning little to no bleeding, minimal pain, rapid healing and low risk of infection.
Cutting edge dentistry with less discomfort
If you have dental phobia and dread the thought of drills and injections, laser dentistry could be the perfect option for you to get the treatment you need, hopefully resulting in a less anxious experience. However, injections may still be necessary depending on your individual needs.
Gummy smile & gum contouring
Many people feel embarrassed to smile due to an uneven gum line and don’t realise that there is a treatment available. Using the laser we can gently create a perfectly sculpted gum line to complement your teeth.
Gum contouring can be performed in one appointment and is a reliable method of enhancing your smile. Contact us today to find out more about laser dentistry or schedule a consultation.
Gum disease & Peri-implantitis
We also use the laser to treat gum disease (periodontal disease) by removing debris and bacteria that cause gum disease and can even stimulate new tissue growth.
Lasers can also clean around infected dental implants (peri-implantitis). This has been shown to be effective in managing this complex condition.
Treatment of TMJ related symptoms
TMJ disorder is an extremely painful condition. It affects the jaws and the surrounding muscles. The most common symptoms include:
- Popping or clicking in the jaw
- Limited jaw motion or locked jaw
- Jaw pain
- Face pain
- Headaches
- Tooth wear or damage
- Neck, shoulder and back pain
TMJ can be treated by restoring proper alignment to your jaw and anti-inflammatory medications fail to do that. We can use a laser in a non-invasive way to help patients to feel better, getting deep into the temporomandibular joint as well as the surrounding joints. Thus reducing the inflammation of the tissues, providing quick relief but also promoting tissue healing by stimulating the production of red blood cells.
What else can lasers do to help you?
- Removal of tartar
- Orthodontic bracket removal
- Crown lengthening for better hygiene and comfort
- Disinfect root canals during root canal treatment
- Help with the relief of cold sores, ulcers and treatment of painful jaw joints
- Carry out minimally invasive, less traumatic hard and soft tissue surgery
- Removal of decayed, infected or compromised teeth

FAQS
What is a dental laser?
A dental laser generates a very specific beam of concentrated light. This beam of light can remove areas of gum infection or tooth decay and artistically sculpt your gums with great precision and accuracy. The laser beam sterilises the affected area and seals off blood vessels, which minimizes the chance of infection or bleeding. Which means patients are much more comfortable both during and after treatment. In many instances, the need for anaesthetic injections is reduced and in some instances eliminated, as well as the associated side effects such as numbness.
Are lasers new to dentistry?
Dental lasers have been used experimentally on the teeth and gums in the 1960s and have long been the standard of care in medicine for many surgical and cosmetic procedures such as wrinkle removal, hair removal and many others. Our laser has been approved for hard and soft tissue procedures and Holmes Dental Care is one of the few dentists to have the technology available for patients.
How does laser dentistry reduce and eliminate pain?
Heat and vibration are the causes of most of the pain associated with the dental drill. Laser dentistry combines laser energy with air-waterspray to perform a wide variety of dental procedures more comfortably. As a result we are able to replace the drill in many instances. This makes laser dentistry more comfortable and definitely the right choice for anxious patients.
What types of procedures can dental laser do?
There are many applications including:
- Non-surgical gum therapy
- Periodontal (gum) treatment
- Smile design
- Removing dental decay and old composite fillings
- Sterilising infected root canals
- Bone shaping and crown lengthening
- Assisting oral surgery (often for removing teeth or placing implants)
