Why choose implant retained dentures?
Traditional dentures can provide a cost-efficient solution to tooth loss but they can also become a nuisance for many wearers. It’s not uncommon for dentures to become loose, which can cause frustration and unwanted embarrassment in social situations. Denture wearers also often report they have had to remove favourite foods from their regular diet because the denture is not secure enough to cope with heavy chewing.
Dental implants are an excellent way to secure dentures in place. They also remove the necessity for the denture to cover the palate, restoring speech and taste, two common challenges associated with dentures.
Dental implants can dramatically improve denture stability and implant supported dentures have special attachments that fasten onto the implants for a snug and secure fit.

Even partial dentures can benefit from strategically placed dental implants to improve their stability – Dr Holmes has a wealth of experience in using dental implants creatively to optimise your outcome.
Our experienced implant dentist, Dr Barry Holmes often recommends implant retained dentures if there is insufficient bone available to place multiple implants, the scope of bone augmentation required is beyond what the patient feels comfortable with or if the patient prefers removable teeth.

How does denture stabilisation work?
With the placement of dental implants, dentures can then be clipped or fastened on to the implants which then hold them firmly in place. For many patients who are already denture wearers, just the ability to stabilise the denture is a real bonus as it allows them to eat and speak normally without worrying about the denture moving or dropping out.
In the lower jaw, as few as two dental implants can be used to make a denture almost immobile and with four, either a lower or upper denture can be made to feel very secure.
Once the implants have healed and fused with the bone we can connect to the denture in a number of ways including the use of a titanium bar which the denture clips onto or ‘press-stud’ style connections which can be the simplest and most cost-effective method – these are called locators. Our implant dentist, Dr Barry Holmes will discuss all the options during a comprehensive implant consultation and help determine which solution is best.

FAQS
What is an implant supported denture?
An implant supported denture is a denture that is supported by and attached to implants. Implant retained dentures are commonly recommended for the lower jaw because conventional dentures here tend to be less stable. Upper dentures tend to be more stable and do not always need the extra support provided by dental implants. However, you can receive implant-supported dentures in both the upper and lower jaws.
Can I have implant supported dentures if I do not have much jawbone remaining?
If using implant retained dentures as a solution, insufficient bone is not necessarily a barrier for treatment, in many cases a denture is one of the best ways to combat missing teeth and we have many techniques available at Holmes Dental Care that can be used for patients with low levels of jawbone including advanced surgical techniques or bone grafting to essentially rebuild the jawbone ready for receiving implants.
What if I do not want a removable denture?
At Holmes Dental Care, there are several alternative solutions. All-on-4 being one possible alternative. We will consider your individual needs and preferences when recommending possible solutions during a comprehensive implant consultation. We will only prescribe solutions or treatments that are appropriate for your individual case.
